Permaculture: Building a More Sustainable Future
Permaculture, a philosophy grounded in systems thinking, guides much of the work on Four Winds Farm. By focusing on natural ecosystems, rewilding, and regenerative principles, the farm works to build resilience and sustainability.
“Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature.” David Holmgren, environmental designer and co-originator of the permaculture concept.
The permaculture design on this property focuses on native Wisconsin ecosystems including oak savannahs, restored prairie, maple, and hardwood forests, while incorporating hay fields and pasture, hop fields, grain production, kitchen gardens, and an apiary. We also manage wetlands, water retention systems, and a composting program.
