On the Farm

Locally-Grown Crops & Natural Goods

Four Winds is a working farm dedicated to producing high-quality agricultural products that are good for people and the land.

With soil health and longevity in mind, farmers here use permaculture and rotational grazing practices to produce hops, Kernza®, wool, and pasture-raised lamb.

Beyond stewarding our staple crops, farm work at Four Winds is highly diversified. A walk around the property will reveal prairies, oak savannah, silvopasture, orchards, lavender beds, an apiary, and annual herb, flower, and vegetable gardens.

We take pride in the bountiful oasis we are establishing here and the ways we share it with our community. Seasonal harvests can be enjoyed at one of our many farm-to-table events hosted throughout the year. Goods like honey, Kernza® flour, wool, and eggs can also be purchased at the Four Winds Farm Store.

Sustainable Crop Farming

Kernza®

In close collaboration with The Land Institute, UW-Madison, and other partners, Four Winds Farm has developed one of the most significant plantings of Kernza® in the state of Wisconsin. This fascinating crop represents a unique path toward the future of agriculture – perennial grain. From a sustainability perspective, it might be the best crop for the land, increasing water retention and organic matter in depleted soils, as well as sequestering significant carbon. Four Winds Farm is proud to be able to supply the local brewing, baking, and distilling industries with whole grain and milled Kernza®.

Supplying Local Wisconsin Breweries

Hops

Since 2018, Four Winds has been a proud grower and producer of some of the finest hops in Wisconsin. Drawing on evidence-based research and the shared experience of a collective of Midwest hop growers, the farmers at Four Winds carefully steward their hopyards using proven practices that promote plant health, sustainability, and consistent quality. Using an onsite harvester, kiln, and conditioning facility, Four Winds ensures each harvest meets the high standards of brewers and craft beverage producers. You will find our hops in delicious beers from New Glarus, Karben4, Working Draft, Delta Beer Lab, Great Dane, Hacienda Brewings, G5, and others.

As members of the Wisconsin Hop Exchange (WHEx), Four Winds makes its six distinctive hop varieties — Centennial, Chinook, Comet, Crystal, Santiam, and Vista — available directly through the cooperative.

Harkening back to Wisconsin’s “hop craze” in the 19th century, our four acres of 20ft hop bines provide a beautiful backdrop for summer weddings and events.

Pasture-Raised Lamb & Ethical Wool Products

Sheep

Four Winds Farm is home to a mixed flock of Cheviot, Tunis, and Tunis/Cheviot cross sheep—hardy, dual-purpose breeds valued for both high-quality meat and medium-weight wool. With access to 20 acres of fenced pasture and silvopasture, the flock is rotationally grazed to support soil health, improve pasture productivity, and promote animal well-being.

Four Winds’ sheep are raised with care, passion, and respect, following the Five Freedoms for Animal Welfare. Lambs remain on pasture with their mothers until weaning age. Pasture-raised lamb is available for sale each fall, and wool products are offered year-round at the Four Winds Farm Store. Inquiries about lamb meat can be directed to courtney@fourwindsfarmfitchburg.com.
